If you want to read a good book about immigrants in Chicago (though these are Eastern European Jewish ones in early 1900′s), you should check out The Lazarus Project by Aleksandar Hemon. It’s quite good.
I read it last year and thought it was really good. I like his use of narrative shifts and pictures, but he is also just a master of language. I think he learned English in just a year, too. I tried to find some of his earlier work, but no luck yet. Good call.

I’d love to make fun of this man, but it’s just too easy. His tone is just priceless–exactly the kind of tone that makes people want to smack you.
